The START Gallery is dedicated to providing local college and university students with an opportunity to gain immersive experience and transferable skills in the visual arts market by developing a venue in which high quality student art is available at reasonable prices. The gallery strives to create a unique experiential learning laboratory in which engaged students have formative experiences while participating in the management and operation of the gallery as they prepare to become viable artists and/or professionals aspiring to leadership roles in art galleries. The gallery will be a place to enjoy, learn, and discover. It will also be a workplace of inclusion and respect, with a main focus on the development of creativity and ideas.
Founded in 2009, START Gallery serves as the only year-round venue for viewing, discussing, and purchasing student works of visual art in the Winston-Salem area. An initiative of Wake Forest University, START Gallery presents 12-15 exhibitions per year featuring Wake Forest University undergraduates and alumni. Most of the art work displayed in START Gallery is generated through studio course work and is therefore a product of close instruction by members of the studio art faculty at Wake Forest University. START Gallery is managed by a recent graduate serving in a one-year fellowship position and staffed by current undergraduate students.
