Internships

START offers internships in the fall, spring, and summer terms. An internship at START is a terrific opportunity to pursue an interest in arts management while making a contribution to the vibrant artistic life of Wake Forest.

Qualifications

To be a START Gallery intern you must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at Wake Forest University and be present on the Reynolda campus for the internship semester. Prospective interns must demonstrate self-motivation and a commitment to the arts and to the mission of the gallery.

Interns tend to be in their third or fourth year of study, but students of any class year who are mature and demonstrably committed to the artistic life of the University are welcome to apply.

Credit for internships during the school year is offered through the Office of Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship and the Art Department. As such, it is strongly advised that applicants for semester internships are declared or intended Art History/Studio Art majors or minors, or Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise minors.

Responsibilities

The START Gallery intern’s duties will include both assistance with clerical gallery procedures and events as well as development and implementation of self-initiated projects.

One of the primary roles of the intern will be to help staff the START Gallery and maintain the daily operations of the gallery. Operational duties include engaging with visitors to the gallery, facilitating art sales, and routine facility maintenance. The intern may also be involved in maintaining inventory records, updating and producing content for social media, and installing exhibitions. Interns will be expected to staff the gallery for approximately 6-8 hours per week (at least 20 hours during the summer).

Interns will determine a specialized project goal at the outset, in conversation with the Gallery Manager and Dr. Morna O’Neill, Associate Professor of Art History, who oversees the internship program. Special projects will result in a deliverable that contributes to the needs of START while benefiting the personal development of the intern. In the past, projects have involved significant research and practical implementation throughout the semester.

START Gallery interns provide unique insights and valuable support to gallery practices and programming. Through the development of personal projects, interns will both benefit START Gallery and complete independent, skills-building projects.

Internships during the fall and spring semesters are offered for 3 hours of course credit. Stipends for summer internships are available through the Office of Career and Personal Development.
