Seeing Before Words
Photographs from 27 Months in Mongolia
Marcus Keely (’10)
SEPTEMBER 14 – OCTOBER 6, 2017
Each year the START Gallery celebrates the achievements of successful alumni from the arts with a solo exhibition during Homecoming. This year START is proud to welcome back Marcus Keely (’10), a creative professional and digital storyteller committed to initiating dialogue around the phenomena which animate the human experience. Keely graduated from Wake Forest University in 2010 with a major in English and minors in History and Studio Art. Following graduation, he served as the second manager of the START Gallery and then as Assistant Director of the Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery. In 2014, Marcus left Wake Forest to teach English for 27 months in Mongolia as a Peace Corps Volunteer. He now lives and works in Vermont.
Seeing Before Words presents images Keely captured during his Peace Corps experience. The exhibition features over 100 photographs, offering a chronological peek into Keely’s human and environmental immersion spanning his time in Mongolia. The spine of this photographic timeline is the changing surface of his frost-covered window, which became a recurring visual motif while he was abroad.
