Deep Dive: Student Photojournalism

The images in Deep Dive were produced by journalism students during an intensive workshop led by documentary photographer Daniella Zalcman and Professor of the Practice Justin Catanoso. Zalcman’s work has taken her around the world to explore difficult and often painful stories, many of them focused on the legacies of western colonialism. She spent a week with WFU students during spring 2018 teaching them the fundamentals of documentary photography, using her work as a model, before sending them out into the field. Taking cues from her, students grappled with compelling and often difficult subjects — sexual assault, the gap between rich and poor, and questions of identity. They came back with provocative images and as importantly, with new insight into the power of visual storytelling. The workshop, or “Deep Dive,” Zalcman led grows out of the Campus Consortium partnership between the Journalism Program and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting in Washington D.C., which supports her work and her residency at Wake Forest. Curated by Jay Buchanan, manager of the START Gallery, and Kayla Amador, a senior Studio Art student, the exhibit marks the beginning a new collaboration between the Journalism Program and the arts at Wake Forest.
